VHFA seeks public input on state's most urgent rental housing needs
VHFA's Executive Director Sarah Carpenter announced today that interested parties are invited to submit comments on how housing tax credits are allocated. Housing tax credits are Vermont’s primary funding source for developing affordable rental housing. The comments will be considered during this year’s upcoming revisions to Vermont’s Qualified Allocation Plan (QAP). As administrator of the housing tax credit program, VHFA allocates credits to specific projects in accordance with identified State needs and Federal requirements outlined in the Vermont QAP. Vermont’s inter-agency Joint Committee on Tax Credits reviews allocation policies and process and makes recommendations on the QAP to VHFA’s Board of Commissioners.

Vermont's median household income and poverty rate improved in 2015
The median income among Vermont households increased in 2015 to $56,990, according to US Census Bureau estimates released this week. The last time this indicator increased for Vermont was 2011.
Improvements in household income in 2015 were experienced nationwide and reported earlier this week by the Census Bureau.
Poverty rate estimates also decreased in Vermont and the U.S. for 2015. Vermont's estimated poverty rate decreased to 10.2% in 2015, with an estimated 61,000 Vermonters below the poverty line. Twenty-five percent of Vermonters living in poor households are children.
Housing tax credits help renovate Lyndonville's Darling Inn
Thanks to VHFA housing credits and other funding sources, the historic Darling Inn, a perpetually affordable apartment building in Lyndonville, reopened its doors this weekend with much celebration. Executive Director, Sarah Carpenter, joined Senator Patrick Leahy and other partners at Saturday’s ribbon cutting.

The number of homeless living in the U.S. who are over the age of 50 has jumped recently, and now comprises 31 percent of the nation's total homeless population, according to the New York Times. This is creating "daunting challenges for social service agencies and governments already struggling with this crisis of poverty."

A recent report from the Bipartisan Policy Center describes the need for a comprehensive national approach to integrating health care and housing for seniors. To counteract the increasing number of vulnerable Americans experiencing hardship as they age, the report makes the following recommendations:
Ground breaking at Elm Place in Milton celebrated
Executive Director Sarah Carpenter joined partners from Cathedral Square and other agencies to launch construction of Elm Place, a 30-unit building for seniors in Milton. Elm Place will be Vermont’s first multi-family building certified to Passive House standards. Better windows and doors, added insulation and improved air sealing are expected to enable the building to use roughly 65 percent less energy.
The project has an anticipated opening date of March 2017. Residents will benefit from Support and Services at Home (SASH) care coordination which supports aging in place through an on-site SASH coordinator and part-time wellness nurse. Two apartments are fully ADA accessible and all apartments are adaptable.
