Our brains process information differently. When making important life decisions, we weigh a few factors deliberately (slowly). But for hundreds of other factors, we must rely on intuitive judgment — and we weigh these unconsciously (quickly). Even if in our slow thinking we work to avoid discrimination, it can easily creep into our fast thinking.

The Village Movement: Getting Started in Vermont

Legislature learns how to turn temporary down payment assistance program into self-funding tool for future home buyers

Vermont's House Committee on Ways and Means learned this morning about opportunities to transform a temporary statewide down payment assistance program enacted last year into a self-funding program that can help first-time home buyers for years to come.  VHFA's Executive Director, Sarah Carpenter, met with the committee this morning to explain how a legacy program could be created with the addition of four years of state housing credit funding. 

Pathways to opportunity: Housing, transportation, and social mobility

Two important factors connecting communities to employment, education, and vital services are affordable housing and transportation. While improving proximity and access to jobs alone certainly won’t solve our social mobility challenges, it can ameliorate problems like segregation, concentrated poverty, and low-density sprawl that pose real barriers to economic progress for low-income families.
