VHFA will buy an abandoned, deteriorating house from the town of St. Johnsbury for $1 and replace it with a new affordable single-family home through the HARP program.

The town of St. Johnsbury acquired the dilapidated St. Mary Street house after it failed to sell at a tax sale.

VHFA has been administering the HARP program in Vermont since 2009.  Through this program, homes that were once foreclosed on by other lenders (besides VHFA) are acquired, rehabilitated, and resold to lower and moderate-income households. Before being resold, they are extensively renovated with significant energy efficiency improvements and new energy star rated appliances
