Requests for housing help increase in 2008

Officials at Vermont 2-1-1, the free referral service operated by the United Ways of Vermont, report more calls this year have been regarding housing assistance than in 2007.

An article in this morning's Burlington Free Press provides some numbers: Through last month, calls in 2008 regarding housing totaled 1,916, compared to a total of housing-related calls in 2007 of 2,089.

In Chittenden County, housing-related calls through last month totalled 590, compared with a total of 669 for last year.

CVCLT names new Executive Director

eileen peltierCentral Vermont Community Land Trust (CVCLT) has named Eileen Peltier Executive Director.

Eileen, who lives in Calais, has been the land trust's Director of Finance and Administration for the last year.

VHMA launches Web site

The Vermont Housing Managers Association's (VHMA) Web site went live this afternoon. You can access the site at www.vhma.net.

Founded in 1981, the VHMA is a collection of property managers and owners, housing funding agencies, accountants, and other professionals.

VHCB receives $1.43 million grant

Our friends at Vermont Housing & Conservation Board (VHCB) will receive a Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program (HOPWA) renewal grant for $1.43 million to continue a statewide HIV/AIDS housing and supportive services program.

The grant is one of 18 made nationwide by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). HUD awarded a total of $19.3 million.

New national housing trust modeled on Vermont

If the new National Affordable Housing Trust Fund, part of the housing relief initiative recently signed into law by President Bush, sounds familiar, it might be because the model for it was developed in Burlington more than 20 years ago.

Housing manager associations to meet in Vermont

Members of the Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire housing managers associations will come together for their triennial "Crossing the Line" conference this fall.

The event will be held at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vt., Oct. 27-29, under the theme, "Housing: Are the Odds in Your Favor?"

Registration fees range from $50 to $300, with hotel stays at the resort available for an additional fee. Deadline to register is Oct. 9.

More kudos for Champlain Housing Trust

We thought Champlain Housing Trust's winning an international award from the United Nations's UN HABITAT earlier this week was pretty big news. (Read our previous post about the award.) Apparently, we weren't the only ones.

The Burlington Free Press writes in an editorial published this morning, the award "is a timely recognition of a worthy effort when affordable housing is such a critical issue in Vermont."

HAC presents free workshops

The Housing Assistance Council (HAC) is presenting two free events in our region in August.

"Building Green for Rural Communities" is a day-and-a-half roundtable and tour taking place starting at 2 p.m. Aug. 11.

"Single-Family Housing Development" is a two-day event running Aug. 13-14. Sponsored by HUD, it's open to CHDOs and many CHDO-eligible organizations.

Champlain Housing Trust wins World Habitat Award

Champlain Housing Trust (CHT) has received a World Habitat Award from UN HABITAT.

The United Nations agency, whose goal is to promote shelter for people worldwide, will present CHT officials with the award at its World Habitat Day event, Oct. 6 in Luanda, Angola.

UN HABITAT presents two such awards a year — one in the northern hemisphere and another in the southern — to recognize "practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems."

CVCLT extends mini-grant deadline

Central Vermont Community Land Trust (CVCLT) has extended the deadline for its 2008 Mini-Grants for Central Vermont to Sept. 12.

These grants will range from $500 to $1,000 and will go to community groups or town committees in towns and cities of Washington County and northern Orange County that are working to develop housing-related projects.
