HomeShare Vermont wins national recognition

homeshare vermont logoHomeShare Vermont Inc. was named a 2008 Older Americans Month Program Champion by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging.

The award highlights programs that demonstrate the principles of the Administration's efforts to modernize community-based long-term care and provide greater assurance that older people will maintain their independence longer.

Vermont Mortgage Assistance Program up and running

bishca logoThe Vermont Banking Division of the Department of Banking, Insurance, Securities & Health Care Administration is now offering Vermonters free, confidential mortgage assistance on its new toll-free number: (888) 568-4547.

The number, part of the new Mortgage Assistance Program, is intended to help Vermonters facing foreclosure explore refinancing and counseling options.

COTS Walk raises $143,000

This past weekend's COTS Walk raised $143,000 to benefit the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Burlington.

The annual 3-mile walk around downtown Burlington raises money and awareness to benefit COTS's mission to provide emergency shelter, services, and housing for the homeless.

Mark your calendar: Next year's COTS Walk is set for Sunday, May 3.

Vermont in running for up to $5 million to preserve affordable housing

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has named Vermont a finalist in a competition for up to $5 million to help preserve and improve affordable housing.

The state's proposal, submitted by Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) and the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board (VHCB), is one of 21 finalists selected from more than 80 submissions.

Vermont's initiative would use the funding to support state rental housing preservation efforts targeted at more than 8,000 apartments in 123 towns over the next decade.

HomeShare Vermont nominated for award

The State of Vermont has nominated HomeShare Vermont, an organization that provides matching services for homesharing and caregiving, for a national award.

The Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living has nominated the South Burlington non-profit as a "Program Champion" in recognition of the Agency on Aging's Older Americans Month.

COTS Walk registration now open

cots walkBurlington's Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) has started accepting registrations for its annual COTS Walk event, to be held Sunday, May 4.

The 3-mile walk around downtown Burlington raises money and awareness to benefit COTS's mission to provide emergency shelter, services, and housing for the homeless.

A number of VHFA staffers will be joining the walk this year.

"Out of Reach" report published

out of reach logoOur friends at the Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition (VAHC) have issued a press release regarding the latest "Out of Reach" report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).

The report shows Vermont is the 18th most expensive state in the nation for renters, and in the top 10 for most expensive rural areas.

Vermont Center for Independent Living is organizing a Universal Design Conference April 24 at the Doubletree Hotel in South Burlington.

VHFA, along with several statewide housing partners, are sponsoring the day-long event. The agenda will include a keynote speaker from Adaptive Environments, and breakout sessions on:

Save the date: Green building workshop

Save the date Friday, May 16 for an all-day workshop on Building Greener Affordable Housing in Vermont presented by VHCB.

The workshop will feature Andy Shapiro of Energy Balance Inc.

Andy's provided energy and other green building design consulting services for 25 years. He's also the Scientist-in-the-Classroom for the Vermont Energy Education Program, training teachers and students from elementary to high school since 1994. He holds an Engineering degree from Brown University and is the author of a number of energy-related publications.
