annual report coverSpring marks the beginning of work on VHFA's annual report/wall calendar.

For the past several years, we've published our annual report in the form of a wall calendar to remind folks of the good work VHFA does year-round in the name of affordable housing.

We're looking for recent homeowners with VHFA mortgage loans who're willing to be photographed for the report.

COTS Walk registration now open

cots walkBurlington's Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) has started accepting registrations for its annual COTS Walk event, to be held Sunday, May 4.

The 3-mile walk around downtown Burlington raises money and awareness to benefit COTS's mission to provide emergency shelter, services, and housing for the homeless.

A number of VHFA staffers will be joining the walk this year.

VHFA, Fair Housing Act celebrate anniversaries

birthday cupcakeToday marks the date in 1974 that Gov. Thomas Salmon signed legislation creating Vermont Housing Finance Agency.

In the past 34 years, we've helped about 26,000 Vermonters purchase primary residences; and have provided financing, development and management support, subsidy administration and tax credits to 7,400 units of multifamily rental housing.

"Out of Reach" report published

out of reach logoOur friends at the Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition (VAHC) have issued a press release regarding the latest "Out of Reach" report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).

The report shows Vermont is the 18th most expensive state in the nation for renters, and in the top 10 for most expensive rural areas.

Save the date: Universal design conference

Vermont Center for Independent Living is organizing a Universal Design Conference April 24 at the Doubletree Hotel in South Burlington.

VHFA, along with several statewide housing partners, are sponsoring the day-long event. The agenda will include a keynote speaker from Adaptive Environments, and breakout sessions on:

Philbrick, Slade receive certification

erin & joshCongratulations to VHFA Multifamily Operations Specialists Erin Philbrick and Joshua Slade for receiving their Tax Credit Specialist certification from the National Center for Housing Management (NCHM) — the result of three days of training and exams held in Boston last month.

Save the date: Green building workshop

Save the date Friday, May 16 for an all-day workshop on Building Greener Affordable Housing in Vermont presented by VHCB.

The workshop will feature Andy Shapiro of Energy Balance Inc.

Andy's provided energy and other green building design consulting services for 25 years. He's also the Scientist-in-the-Classroom for the Vermont Energy Education Program, training teachers and students from elementary to high school since 1994. He holds an Engineering degree from Brown University and is the author of a number of energy-related publications.

Rinnai wall furnace recall

recalled furnaceThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Rinnai America Corp. recently announced a voluntary product recall of certain direct-vent wall furnaces.

VHFA is helping bring the recall to the attention of homeowners — and owners and managers of multi-family properties — who might have such furnaces installed in their units.
