HAC presents free workshops

The Housing Assistance Council (HAC) is presenting two free events in our region in August.

"Building Green for Rural Communities" is a day-and-a-half roundtable and tour taking place starting at 2 p.m. Aug. 11.

"Single-Family Housing Development" is a two-day event running Aug. 13-14. Sponsored by HUD, it's open to CHDOs and many CHDO-eligible organizations.

We've posted descriptions for the 18 workshops of the 2008 Vermont Statewide Housing Conference, and have started posting speaker bios as they roll in.

The conference is Vermont's premiere housing event, coming around every two years. This year's event will be Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel & Conference Center in South Burlington.

Center for Rural Studies celebrates 30 years

Our friends and partners at the Center for Rural Studies (CRS) at the University of Vermont (UVM) in Burlington are ramping up for their 30th anniversary celebration coming this fall.

The Center will hold a free anniversary symposium on Saturday, Oct. 4 at UVM's Davis Center. The day-long event will include:

Housing conference: Registration now open

Register online now for the Nov. 18 event. Do it before Oct. 17 and take 20% off the registration fee, paying the "early bird" fee of just $40 for the day-long event.

COTS Walk raises $143,000

This past weekend's COTS Walk raised $143,000 to benefit the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Burlington.

The annual 3-mile walk around downtown Burlington raises money and awareness to benefit COTS's mission to provide emergency shelter, services, and housing for the homeless.

Mark your calendar: Next year's COTS Walk is set for Sunday, May 3.

VHFA hosts craft day to benefit United Way

kids craft dayVHFA held its second annual Kids Craft Day yesterday, to benefit the United Way.

Children aged 3-12 participated by making a variety of craft projects and a Mother's Day card in the VHFA Board Room.

By charging each child's parent/guardian a participation fee, the event raised $200 for the United Way of Chittenden County.

Montpelier Affordable Housing Week coming this month

statehouseMontpelier Mayor Mary Hooper declared the week of May 18-24 "Montpelier Affordable Housing Week."

The mayor's official declaration recognizes "great leadership" among many interests in working "to increase the number of affordable homes in Montpelier.

COTS Walk registration now open

The 3-mile walk around downtown Burlington raises money and awareness to benefit COTS's mission to provide emergency shelter, services, and housing for the homeless.

A number of VHFA staffers will be joining the walk this year.
