Governor Shumlin, VHFA’s Sarah Carpenter and many others gathered yesterday to celebrate the opening of South Main Apartments in Waterbury.

When Ladd Hall was hit by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, few would have imagined the remarkable transformation that would take place over the next four years. Originally constructed in the 1890s and then converted to state agency offices, Irene’s flood waters invaded the building through heating system tunnels.

With more than 200 Waterbury homes also damaged or lost during the storm, the community prioritized the need for additional affordable housing during recovery efforts. “VHFA was proud to provide the federal and state low-income housing credits needed to include 27 affordable apartments in Waterbury’s transformation,” Carpenter explained.

The project was managed by Downstreet Housing & Community Development and Housing Vermont with additional funding provided by the VT Agency of Commerce and Community Development, Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and the federal HOME program.

Downstreet is currently accepting applications for these beautiful new one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
