BURLINGTON—Executive Director Sarah Carpenter announced that George Demas of Colchester has joined Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) as General Counsel. He directs and administers all legal matters for the Agency, including: real estate closings; federal and state housing program activities; work associated with the issuance of bonds and other funding sources; litigation, including foreclosures; and legal aspects of VHFA’s corporate matters. “George brings many years of commercial finance and lending experience, as well as general counsel support. We’re excited to have him join the VHFA team,” said Carpenter. Demas was Assistant General Counsel for the Vermont Department of Banking, Insurance, Securities and Health Care Administration in Montpelier for the past year. Before that, he spent nine years at Bombardier Capital Inc. in Colchester, his last three as Vice President, Legal Services, Clerk and Secretary. He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Vermont Bar Association. Demas holds a J.D. from the University of Georgia Law School, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif; Legal Aid & Defender Society; Equal Justice Foundation; Student Bar Association; ABA, Law Student Division; and served on the editorial board of the Georgia Law Review. VHFA was created by the Vermont Legislature in 1974 to finance and promote affordable housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income Vermonters. Since its inception, the Agency has helped approximately 26,500 Vermont households with affordable mortgages and financed the development of 7,700 affordable rental units.
